What is your name, credentials & background?

Alethia Davis, M.S.Ed., MHC-LP

I received my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Brooklyn College (I originally wanted to be a pediatrician!). During that time, I volunteered at the National Eating Disorders Association and developed a love and interest in working with individuals with eating disorders. After taking a gap year, I attended Hunter College, where I received my Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling. Since then, I have been able to work with individuals with substance use disorders, eating disorders, and severe and persistent mental illnesses (SPMI) in PHP/CDTP hospital settings.

What is your role at BALANCE?

I am a primary therapist at BALANCE. I provide case management sessions and group therapy using DBT and CBT.

What does a typical day for you look like at BALANCE?

A typical day for me at BALANCE usually involves running a process group, skills-based group, and meal support if necessary. On a not so typical day, this may include crisis intervention or meeting with a client who is distressed. Every day is unique, but I love it!

What is your favorite part about working at BALANCE and helping those recover from eating disorders?

My favorite part about working at BALANCE is knowing that I have the support of an amazing team no matter what may be happening, which is crucial considering how challenging the job can be at times. What I love about helping individuals with eating disorders is that each person is so different. No textbook or class could have prepared me for this field! However, it’s so rewarding to see clients grow and progress in treatment.

What is one of our favorite foods or recipes?

Only one? Pizza, pizza, pizza!!

What is a fun fact not many know about you?

I love to travel, and I love going to the beach when I do! I could listen to the sound of the ocean for hours. I recently took a six week sewing class and sewed my first pair of trouser pants! They came out pretty nice too!
