Caring for Eating Disorders in the LGBTQ+ Community

FREE Webinar with Melainie Rogers, MS, RDN, CDN, CEDRD-S Founder of BALANCE Eating Disorder Treatment Center™ and Dr. Shervin ShadianlooMD

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 6th
Time: 7:00pm - 8:30 pm EST

This webinar will provide an overview of the biological, developmental, psychological, cultural, and social issues essential to understanding the prevalence and complexity of eating disorders in the LGBTQ+ community.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), LGBTQ+ individuals are at a disproportionately higher risk for developing eating disorders due to discrimination, fear of rejection when coming out, lack of support from family and peers, institutionalized stigma, and violence. In transgender people, there are additional and unique stressors that may play a role in the development of an eating disorder.

This presentation will embrace a variety of topics central to providing effective clinical intervention and treatment with LGBTQ+ clients. The presenter will discuss the intersection of critical variables including biology, gender identity, sexual orientation, body image, self-esteem, and psychological development from childhood through adulthood. In addition, the discussion will include an understanding of the barriers to care and the need for culturally competent LGBTQ+ affirming treatment providers for clients navigating the path to recovery.

The evening will include time allotted for Q&A, so participants are encouraged to bring questions and comments for discussion.
