MEET THE HOSTs and panelists

Melainie Rogers, MS, RDN, CDN, CEDRD-S (she/her)

CEO & Founder of BALANCE

Melainie is the Founder and CEO of BALANCE eating disorder treatment center™, melainie rogers nutrition, llc & Redefining Wellness.
Having struggled with an eating disorder herself, she fully understands the complexities of the recovery journey and is now dedicated to supporting others in their quest to achieve long-term recovery as she has. She is a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) & Supervisor, and an official mentor through iaedp’s (International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals) Connection, Outreach, and Mentoring Committee. As a mentor, Melainie uses her vast experience to provide guidance to clinicians new to the field of eating disorders.

Shana Minei Spence, MS, RDN, CDN (she/her)

Shana is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist based in New York. She is an "all foods fit" dietitian that creates a platform for open discussion on nutrition and wellness topics that are anti-diet, Health at Every Size, and non-weight-centric. She owns her business, The Nutrition Tea, which provides consulting and counseling work. Speaking engagements include Peloton, NEDA, Eating Recovery Center, The Rose Retreats, Food Fluence 2022, and Eat Well Global. She can be seen in media such as NPR, Shape Magazine, GQ, SELF Magazine, Women's Health Magazine, Outside Magazine, ABC Good Morning America, and Healthline. Podcasts include Conversations with Kenzie, Well and Good, Train Happy Podcast, The Light Show, Real Pod, Let Us Eat Cake, What The Actual Fork, and RD Real Talk.

Courtney Dowdell, LCAT, RDT/BCT, CEDCAT (she/her)

Courtney is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist and Certified Eating Disorder Creative Arts Therapist specializing in depression, anxiety, trauma, disordered eating, and body image challenges. She received her MA from New York University. Courtney utilizes a relational and psychodynamic approach within a creative framework to help clients set realistic goals and work toward change. She also has extensive experience collaborating with other treatment professionals to develop an individualized treatment plan to support eating disorder recovery. Her passion is to help her clients work toward relational freedom and satisfaction, develop a compassionate inner voice, and establish and enforce healthy boundaries in relationships.

Beck Liatt, LMSW (they/them)

BALANCE Clinical Director

Beck is a licensed social worker with experience working in community-based programs, residential eating disorder programs, and at the outpatient level of care. They have historically worked with the queer/trans community, those looking to explore sexuality, and folks struggling with eating disorders/body image. Beck completed their undergraduate education at Skidmore College, majoring in Social Work and Gender Studies before receiving their MSW at Smith College School for Social Work. They utilize AEDP, ACT, and DBT frameworks when working with clients. They believe engaging in therapy and treatment is an opportunity to reconnect with our most authentic selves.

Jackie Appel (she/her)

BALANCE Alum

Jackie Appell (she/her) joins us to share her journey through eating disorder recovery. Having battled anorexia, binge eating disorder, and associated body image struggles, Jackie comes to the table with a unique point of view on what life looks like “on the other side”. She speaks with individuals struggling with eating disorders / disordered eating to shed light on what recovery looks like, and works with their family members so they can better understand the eating disorder mentality. She also gives lectures at New York University to students training to enter eating disorder and nutrition-related clinical fields. Jackie is a strong advocate for the body positivity and intuitive eating movements, and she is grateful for her family, friends, and the team at BALANCE for her recovery journey.
