What is Yoga Therapy?

At BALANCE, our programs utilize an integrative therapeutic approach that incorporates evidence-based treatments and is collaborative in nature. Yoga therapy encompasses three components: physical postures or asana, breathing techniques known as pranayama, and meditation practices. In conjunction with mainstream treatment, these three practices can greatly improve one’s ability to recognize the onset of anxiety, stop automatic thoughts, bring awareness to one’s breath, feel present in their body, and most of all, to relax.

Benefits of Yoga Therapy?

Yoga is known to modulate the stress response, calm the nervous system, reduce the heart rate, lower blood pressure, and ease rapid breathing. It is proven that yoga can effectively serve as a treatment component to a clinical treatment plan. Yoga can be a complementary component to an existing therapeutic treatment, aiding in the healing of cognitive and physical symptoms. Yoga therapy teaches awareness of the body’s functions and feelings, which allows one to re-connect the body with the mind.

Goals

The main goals of yoga therapy groups at BALANCE are to integrate yoga practices as a part of a client’s evidence-based treatment plan, bringing awareness and attention to the body and mind, relieving anxiety symptoms, and improving mood.
