BALANCE’s reputation as a leader in the area of advocacy and activism in eating disorder awareness reached new heights in 2019. We remained sponsorship of the NEDA walk and Realize Your Beauty Day, and continued our partnership with Project Heal to provide grants to those in need of treatment. In addition, after the announcement of a new childhood dieting app set to release, BALANCE created the social media campaign #wakeupweightwatchers. This took the internet by storm and went viral in September 2019, garnering attention from news publications like the New York Post, NBC, Today, Buzzfeed, the Washington Post, and multiple international news publications. BALANCE then kept up this momentum in December with the release of our free eating disorder recovery Ebook, Redefining Wellness, which has over 100 downloads through 2019 and is growing every day. This book, which serves as a guide against our pervasive diet culture, is a compendium of almost 150 writings from eating disorder specialists and body-positive advocates. It also contains hundreds of activities and resources for readers to utilize on their road to recovery from disordered eating.

Below are some of the positive comments from the Stevie® Award judges on BALANCE’s Company of the Year nomination:

“[BALANCE} is indeed a robust player in the space of treating eating disorders, and its philosophy of helping clients develop a 'neutral and peaceful relationship' with food is powerful. Medical evidence points at the correlation between eating disorders and mental health conditions, and this entry clearly demonstrates the growth potential in the health sector by offering an excellent value proposition. It also shows a wonderful team dedicated to excellence. Striking a balance between scalability and quality is something to watch for. Overall, well done!”

“I believe that BALANCE has put its hand on the key to success of the relation between food and body, which is ‘balance’ away from the pressures of fashion magazines and pictures of movie stars, through a system that combines a group of treatments that deal with the person as a whole and not only psychological symptoms under a distinctive and remarkable slogan which is ‘Health at Every Size’. It is a distinctive system of professional work that represents the lifeline for many.”
